Every day we come across photos of children dying of malnutrition and diseases in several parts of the world and we can’t help but feel sorry for the way their sad eyes stare at us, the way their silent lips scream for help and how their bony bodies crave for food. But feeling sorry is not going to end the vicious cycle of poverty, malnutrition and disease. We must invest more than just emotions in helping these kids get the nutrition they need to grow to their full potential, and that is the sole mission of Feed My Starving Children organization (FMSC). Feed My Starving Children in a non-profit organization that is committed to feeding starving children all over the world. Each meal produced at FMSC costs 22 cents and 92 percent of the total donation goes directly toward the food program.
Vibha-Chicago actively participated at Feed My Starving Children on March 12th at Aurora,
IL location. We had an enthusiastic team of 16 people including adults and kids who were a lot of fun to work with while packing bags and boxes of food. Our station worked on packing food for Kenya in Africa. The process is quite simple. Adults and children hand pack these meals called MannaPack which contains rice, soy, vitamins and dried vegetables. These meals are packed in small pouches which are delivered to FMSC’s chain of distributors who then deliver it to local partners who feed kids at orphanages, schools, clinics and feeding programs. We all worked together as a team and packed 25+ boxes on our working station. By the end of the event, all groups had packed more than 150 boxes each containing 36 meals. The best part of the event is that you actually get to try the food you just packed, and it was quite delicious.
Volunteering experience at FMSC was a pure delight. So many people came together in one room to make thousands of meals for starving children, stationed together, having a fun time doing something that will make a difference of a lifetime in their lives. Knowing that just two hours of our time made a difference in someone’s life is an empowering feeling and we are hoping that we continue to invest our money, time and prayers in helping those who can’t help themselves. Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”. We hope that our experience at Feed My Starving Children will inspire many more people to join us at our next event.
